Trafficology – Most people have never heard of the word, and its apparently not any known dictionary. It’s a word known among Search Engine Optimization firms. But those of us who have websites and want more and more traffic to our websites; it might be a word worth getting to know.

It’s all about getting and understanding traffic to your website; in a nutshell it may include:

  1. The social science of web traffic – Who your web visitors are, their demographics, their location and any other trends that may affect surfing like seasonal tends. Are you website likely to attract a wide cross section of visitors, the upper, middle or lower class or a combination? Are your visitors likely to be males, females or males buying products for females or vice versa?

  2. Unique and innovative traffic generation ideas, techniques and tactics – How are you going to get your visitors? Are you planning to use search engine optimized (SEO) webpages and a ton of backlinks to your site? Are you planning to use Google Adwords to attract your visitors, or a combination of both? Are you planning on having a lot of traffic coming from directories, other websites or from traditional forms of advertising? ie. flyers, advertisements etc.

Depending on your chosen keywords it may be best (and cheaper) to use SEO webpages. In some circumstances this may not be desirable as the first 10 spots in Google have very stiff competition.

The tactics also involves how to increase your page rank, by getting high quality backlinks from high page ranking websites.

  3. The techniques of converting visitors to profits – This involves estimating and increasing the conversion rate of visitors to your website.

All in all, its how to get your website to function in the most efficient way to attract visitors and accordingly sales.
